Kaylessa Had a Dream

Kaylessa woke in the stillness of the pre-dawn hours. She was shivering slightly, and found herself tangled up in her bedcovers. She had been startled awake by the strangest of dreams…

She lay there for a time, wondering if she really had dreamed at all. Was that the sound of a horse whinny? There were no horses anywhere nearby. Was it only the wind whistling through the trees outside? But there was a cool breeze that promised to be a warm day. And the moon was high in the sky…

The horse whinny sounded again, but closer this time. Someone was coming, someone she knew well.

She sat up, and smiled at her younger sister, who was sleeping on the other side of the room. Kaylessa knew that her sister often had strange dreams, so she waited until her breathing slowed.

She thought back to the bits of pieces of the dream she had just awoken from.

It had seemed so real, yet she could not recall some of its details. It had been something about horses…and a man she had known when she was little, before he had left to fight in a war. He was a strange man, with an aura of power about him.

She remembered that he was supposed to come back. But, would he return? Or, would she never see him again?

She tried to remember more, but it was no use. She could not recall any more of it. The dream seemed so vivid, and now that it was gone, she wished it would come back. She wanted to understand her dreams.

Her sister stirred, and Kaylessa decided that now might not be the best time to ask her sister about the dream, so she lay back down. Her sister settled down and began to snore softly.

Kaylessa sighed, and fell back into her pillow. She did not want to wake her sister, as she knew that her sister liked to sleep late. She also knew that her sister was fond of dreams and stories. So she was quiet, waiting for her sister to wake.
